First of all, "Great tone" is subjective. I think de Lancie's tone is gorgeous, where as probably 80% of this board would disagree with me. Meanwhile, Mack's tone is rather dull, but I'm sure the 80% would disagree with me on that as well. Depending on the "great tone" you want, you're going to have to construct a reed to allow such tone, which depends on how much strength you have in your mouth. Generally, the thicker or "woodier" the tone you prefer, the more cane, the harder the reed, the more strength. The more piercing, or focused tone, the less cane, the easier the reed, the less biting strength necessary.
Second of all, depending on what you're using the record, it might not be an accurate representation of what you sound like say... 5 feet, 10 feet, 20 feet, and more. Tone changes as distance varies. Try experimenting with a digital Mp3 recorder with good microphones, or a decent Minidisk recorder.
