Hi everyone,
I have come to realize that as one gets older, I think one has more of an appreciation for the magical and marvelous sounds and intricacy of Bach. I have in the recent months been trying to find anything and everything I can of Bach that can be played on oboe/EH. Julie Giacobassi transcribed a wonderful set of transcriptions of the Bach Cello Suites for EH (or oboe) and Alex Klein played several Bach Partitas (originally for violin) on oboe on one of his CD's. Today I had the privelage of soloing with the college orchestra where I am the oboe professor, on the Bach Double (vln/oboe) and again am enamored.
I began to have a thought: If we can transcribe all of this music from other instruments and play them on our own instruments (be it oboe, saxophone, etc.) then does it make it ok to perform the Bach Oboe d'amore concerto on oboe as opposed to Oboe d'amore, especially since I don't own an oboe d'amore (but have played it on oboe d'amore in the past). So, does it make it musically "improper or taboo" to play/perform it on oboe or EH (I have an arrangement for EH as well) as opposed to its intention which is oboe d'amore?
The main reason I ask if that I have encountered musical purists along the way who feel that Bach should only be played/performed as intended. Therefore, they guffaw at the idea of playing one of his amazing cello suites on EH or oboe.
Thanks -- just pondering these thoughts. My own is that it shouldn't matter what one performs any of these works on -- as long as they are musically satisfying and able to share Bach's wonderful music and amazing counterpoint with listeners!
