Re: Clarinetist has question for Oboe player!

<<does an oboe instrument get wet inside from moisture from playing?>>

ROTFL! Water collection is the bane of oboists everywhere. The oboe has got to be one of the most watery instruments in the world, if not in quantity, at least in the effect the gathering of water in the very small bore of the top joint has on the instrument's playing capabilities. Gurgle.

<<Or is the cork or piece that is inserted into the oboe have a channel drilled through it?>>

The cork piece is actually a cork-wrapped open metal tube, onto which the reeds are tied. How would the air get into the instrument, if it were a solid hunk of whatever?

<<Also, what is the lowest note that it plays?>>

The lowest note on a full-conservatory oboe is the Bb below middle C. Some oboes only go down to B -- maybe some older ones don't even have that. My biggest lesson in early oboe acquisition was learning that (unlike clarinets, say) not all oboes have all the possible keys on them. I guess the theory is that, by the time you are able to do the things that those keys do, you'll be ready for a better oboe. As an adult who is already musically literate, I would have been better off getting a full (or at least modified) conservatory oboe right away.
