One thing I really missed out when I studied clarinet was Baroque music - obviously sax and clarinet didn't exactly have a look in when it came to Baroque, but since taking up oboe I've enjoyed playing the music I like, and also with Baroque there's a lot of opportunity to improvise and embellish the music as much or as little as you feel.

But I took up oboe with the intention of playing cor anglais - and there's more Romantic music written for cor - which is the other main era I like.


Definitely find a GOOD oboe teacher, one that has a passion for playing and teaching, good people skills and can show you how to adjust your reeds. Even if you only have a few lessons here and there, a good teacher and one you get on with well will make it all worthwhile. If you can only have the odd lesson every so often, take notes during lessons so you know what to do and what to aim for, and work on things as and when you can so by your next lesson your teacher can see what improvements you've made.
