Dear Chris and Walter, and all...
thank you all so much again for the great advice. I went to our only music store here, and I asked if I could see an oboe, and they had one in the back room! Yep, it was a new plastic Yamaha...I could not see a number on it though to identify it, and to be honest, it did not feel really solid like my Normandy 4 clarinet (1974 year model). Somehow the hardware seemed very delicate, but nonetheless it was really, really a thrill to see one up close. I was kind of surprised that it seemed a little smaller than what I thought it would be. How I would have loved to play on it, but the reed (I almost believe it was the only reed for it in the store was in a cute little separate container in the case. He quoted over $1700.00 for it, but I drooled and drooled. I'm a big baby when it comes to instruments. Grin.

Chris...Regarding baroque music; I would love to know more exactly what you like in that realm if you don't mind; do you know of a CD that you like that you can mention that I could track down at Amazon.com to listen to (with a lot of oboe on it)? A lot of their CD's you can listen like a fifteen or so second excerpt.

Oh, and I just saw at-- I think? Musician's Friend, yesterday that the new Essential Elements 2000 books now include a DVD (15 minute demo for the appropriate instrument) plus the CD. I have not seen them physically yet, but wow, that sounds very nice. Price is a little higher but I think still very reasonable.
