Hi Dan --

I'm not sure you should limit your search to just the Yamaha or the Barrington. I have had experience with Yamaha, none with Barrington.

Here's the sum of my insight: DON'T get your daughter an oboe without fulll-conservatory (or almost-full conservatory) keywork. ESPECIALLY don't get one without left-hand F. That would exclude the Yamaha 211 right away.

The Barrington has gotten very positive mention on this board, but I have no idea whether it is going to stand the test of time.

Another good instrument to consider is the Fox student line http://www.foxproducts.com/. There are several Fox players on this board. Maybe they will chime in? I think WW&BW carries Fox, too.
