I ordered three Barringtons last December, played on them for a week (or tried to), then took all of them to a really good repair shop to ask the oboe repair person which one I should have fixed (in order to make it playable). They all had major problems (alignment, keys, pads, etc.). The repair person was very dismayed with all of them.
In the end, I mailed all of them back. Instead of spending $800 on a Barrington, I spent more and was able to buy a nice Buffet - which I'm happy with.
The tone on the Barringon(s) wasn't the problem, it was the everything else. They was just very poorly put together. Even a beginner, such as myself, could see that the keys and levers were not aligned and wouldn't play.
On the brighter side though, many of the reviews that I read about the Barrington gave it high marks considering the price point. So, maybe some of the horns are put together better than others. We were able to have three at a time to look at - which was nice. Unfortunatly, we weren't able to keep any of them.
