I read somewhere that after 3 minutes of rest, your fatigued muscle fibers are as rested as they are ever gonna be.
So I've been playing the oboe for a YEAR now, and my practice STILL goes like this:
Five minutes playing--by the clock.
Embouchure quits.
Three minute rest period using egg timer.
Increasingly shorter increments of practicing, interspersed with 3-minute rests, until finally I'm down to 16 and then 8-bar increments.
I manage to get through an hour of total playing time in about 2 hours this way.
The lack of stamina is what I'm finding the #1 most frustrating thing at this point; I can't work on phrasing, tone, or fingering if I can't play for longer than 16 bars without having to stop for a rest.
So see what you have to look forward to. :D
My dog normally sleeps on the stair landing, but when I was just starting, a year ago, she used to get up and go downstairs in a marked manner whenever it was practice time.
But now she doesn't. So that's progress, at least.
