Sounds to me like you've always had someone telling you what to play. It's time to take control and do exactly what you want.
Your description of the piano mirrors my own. I believe that the piano should be learnt when young. Yes, there are adults who can get to a high level, but the hand-brain coordination is very complex and for most adults it really is extremely difficult.
I had extremely unmusical parents who didn't allow me to learn an instrument, so I learnt classical guitar when I was 18 and taught myself to read music. A bit of cello, piano...career...marriage...kids etc. Then clarinet, sax and a bit of oboe.
One son is 10 and plays piano better than I ever could. The other son is 13 and plays the trumpet very well. I can manage to play about 1 and a half octaves on it. It's so difficult!!
If I have to choose, it would be the clarinet and oboe. I've made progress that is simply phenomenal compared to the other instruments. It's like I've finally 'Come home'.
The oboe is more complex in design, but, assuming it has been adjusted and regulated correctly, I wouldn't say it's a difficult instrument. It's far less stressful than a clarinet. If the reed is good, the the oboe will sing.
On a clarinet, there's the mouthpiece, the reed, ligature and barrel and you worry about all of them.
Oh, and I'm definitely not talented. Just a bit crazy about music.
Go for it!!
