Whew, Susan, you hit a few nerves there! I think a lot of what you said about your husband applies to me, and that's good to know going in. Good, very good, information...thanks! I'm hoping my age and new-found patience as a "real grownup" will help me get through this time.
Geoff, thanks. I've always felt that beyond the obvious desire to learn, I owe the teacher an honest effort. Besides, if you don't love the instrument and music enough to practise...well...it's kind of a bad sign.
Dutchy, I guess I was a bit vague. Yes, the production is mechanical, at its base. But even I have had those moments when the practise came together and the notes just sort of flowed out without me having to be conscious of how I was making them, and I could just "get into the music." Those moments kept me going through the bad times. I expect much of practise to be mechanical, but I hope that at some point, the "flow" will occur.
I think you're right about the bass. I was always more interested in melody. Actually, my favorite part of playing the bass was "locking in" with the drummer and feeling that rhythmic teamwork happening.
Anyway, one last update for now. I got the keyboard and music yesterday, got a great salesperson who was very helpful for my >koff< "six year old niece." I assembled and experimented a bit with the oboe last night, and it was fun. It's SO different than anything I've tried before...I think that will help. No baggage! (That keyboard had some, when I started playing around a bit it brought back some bad memories, kind of made me feel sad and disappointed. But it's just a tool for me now, rather than an end in itself, so that feeling passed.) Contacted the teacher, she sounds GREAT, she's champing at the bit to get teaching me. She'd rather I not do much on the oboe until our first lesson next week, but she's all for the piano/reading work.
Thanks again to all for your help, and I'll report back in a month or three with an update...or sooner if I have problems the teacher and I can't work out! In the meantime, back to lurking.
You folks are great!!
