While oboe models are certainly not a small factor when it comes to performance, I think that the model of the make isn't as important when you are searching for a specific "sound" you want. Rather, you should try to find out how you can "work with" each instrument by tweaking your reeds or your playing to match your oboe. Generally speaking, as long as the make of oboe isn't known to be really horrible, you shouldn't go wrong with any of the previously mentioned oboes.

I would personally second the opinion of Matt Lin on the other thread that you started. The Fossati E30 is a great oboe for a low price. Although it's branded and priced like a semi-pro instrument, it is often considered a "pro" grade oboe make.

BTW... What do you mean when you say that the Yamaha 431 sounded "American"?
