I never tried a 831 but it has the same bore-style as the 431 and should therefore be similar to blow, but the 831is a professional oboe and have more keywork and is therefore heavier. I have a 821 which was replaced by the 831 1999 (I think) and the 821 has not the same bore style as the 831 (or 431). The second number definies the bord style:
1 = Old american style
2 = Old european style
3 = New european style
4 = New american style
