As Chris stated "With a top heavy instrument, it will tip back towards you while you're playing whereas a bottom heavy one will be tipping away from you and you'll definitely feel that in your right thumb and arm" This is exactly why I've given up using a fully mechanised Oboe (S55c). It was bottom heavy. I can imagine that the Viennese Oboe with it's lovely 'onion bulb' feature at the reed end would also be well balanced at the top end. (I assume)
