Oboi, you do and feel exacly the same as I do. I love to play the flute but my problem with lack of air and that I had to do an extra inhalation in the middle of a phrase made me understand that I have to struck to the oboe.
I also cancentrate on exhaling and I don´t think at all about where, when and how much air I inhale. One additional thought is that I have also to think about the diaphragm tension, if I sing it is very nice to exhale/inhale and keeping the diaphragm tension, you can make the amazing phrase-start then, but if I do the same while I play the oboe I soon get dizzy and have lots of trouble. If I think of exhale and to loose up the diaphragm tension (just try to loose up everything during a short pause in the music (don´t drop the oboe)), I can play for hours without any trouble.
