If you are looking to build lung capacity outside of music, I would look into an athletic exercise that you find appealing. I love tennis and soccer (football for those of you across the pond). I find time at least 3 times a week to play competitively, and it makes a difference. Running or swimming may also be appealing to those that do not enjoy competition.
Another sport that I found very helpful to lung capacity was scuba diving. I don't know how this would affect asthma, as I do not have this, but I think I can attribute it's positives to a few points. Breathing through the respirator of compressed air actually pushes more air in your lungs than you may have by breathing alone, and I think this opened up my lung capacity after I was done the exercise. Also, diving in salt water always opens my sinuses and chest. If ever I was a bit sick or under the weather, some time in the salt water would clear all the bad stuff from my system. Some don't have access to scuba diving, but if you get the chance, I strongly recommend trying the sport. It's really a blast.
