Greetings!
I've found that the best breathing exercise (I'm asthmatic) IS playing oboe. With a hard reed. This builds the muscles for breathing-- strength. For volume/capacity, a few days of flute will let you know what's what. Although I play oboe with 'a full tank of air', the flute really gets you going for capacity, as it seems that as soon as you inhale, you expell it much faster (it not only seems that way, but it's true!!) My oboe practice IS my asthma therapy. Everyone should be so lucky as to have their therapy be something they love this much!
