I returned to Lee Valley this afternoon in the hopes of buying one of those roller guides.... they are really not made for knives: really for chisels or planes. My Graf folding knife is not deep enough (not long enough from edge to back) such that the clamp hits the stone and prevents the edge from touching the stone.
I can get an extension with rare-earth magnets that hold the blade really well, but I'd have to pay about $75 for the 2 parts. In terms of keeping the same angle, as long as the magnet extension is kept at the same distance on the roller rig, no problem.
But I don't want to pay that for a makeshift gizmo, and you need to buy a big stone for those (expensive): so I'll keep re-defining the bevel by hand.....
I would have hoped Wicked edge allows the knife to be tilted left or right for a bevel on either side, but you're right about the circular motion of the strop blocks. At any rate, the price.... you can't just buy one or two strop blocks, to do a good job, you really need the kit.
Rob, there must be a way to re-design your fixture to hold any knife by the handle? Sure there will be variances in angle with each use, but you don't really need the fixture unless re-defining the bevel anyway. The front-flat side can be well honed with no fixture so long as there is at least a small amount of hollow in it.
