to Bobo: I would just like to paraphrase your third statement by saying that, without the influence of a certain (former) Chicago oboist, I would have never picked up an oboe! But, in general, I don’t think that this is an uncommon occurrence and I’m sure that others have gone through the same thing.
Regarding your second statement, I actually like those “chains”, but I do want to expand my horizons by working on some of the T/dL concepts, For example, I’m using solfeggio in relearning the Handel c minor sonata. The late, Warren Benfield, string Bass player and teacher (PO, CSO, Curtis, and NU) told me, it really helps in memorization, which should make it worth the price of admission. I want to try thinning the tip, as much as possible. The recent thread about “Template Profiles” mentioned something about “Philadelphia” reeds not being the same as regular, American style reeds. That’s worth looking into. Also, working on long tones and the 8-beat crescendo/8-beat decrescendo on octaves is something I want to do. Unfortunately, Earth days are only 24 hours long. Regards.
R. Still former student
