Well said! And the style of playing, the tone color and the use of vibrato are all subjective choices. Just as those things define your playing style, so do they also define my listening style.
I admire Heinz Hollinger's musicianship, but his bright, thin sound sets my teeth on edge. This isn't a criticism of Hollinger or an apology for my taste, but a simple matter of preference: there is no right or wrong, simply what floats your boat, and even if we disagree about Hollinger, I'll still buy you a beer...
I freely admit I worship at the alter of the American School. Lifschey is my chosen deity, but the Gombergs, Genovese, Woodhams, Still, deLancie, Greenbank are the people to model my playing after.
I love to listen to Albrecht Meyer. I wouldn't do it his way, but it's an enlightening approach and his tone, although not my first choice, is in the ballpark of what I think oboe should sound like.
Am I prejudiced? You bet. I prefer chocolate ice cream to strawberry too, but I won't hold your choices against you...
