Bart's Handel on this live recording cannot justify what he did in that studio recording of his with the same ensemble. But it's interesting because he plays also with different nuances here. The reeds he makes for baroque oboe uses the same principle as his modern oboe reeds. He is a truly one remarkable oboe player!

Bobo, what you say is right on. Although, the wires could serve a different function. Because he distorts the staples to make a smaller opening, these reeds tend to collapse. The upper wire is applied right after tying and stays there because Bart HAND SHAPES (yes...just like in the 18th century...) and the wire prevents the slipping of such a wide shape (thus the dark sound and short length).

Robin, unfortunately what you say cannot be further from the truth! RC12 is very different from -2 primarily because it has a rather narrow neck to begin with, and flares quite a lot towards the top, whereas as -2 is rather wide from the neck towards the top (you can tie it as long as you want and it will still close). The D12 has a very special tapered opening which differs from the flattish oval that the Chiarugi 3 has. I highly suggest trying the RC12! The D12 could work for Loree as well, they make the higher register higher!

Regards,
Howard
