So far, my best reeds are at around 0.57mm and I want to experiment with thinner to be able to scrape less.
=> quality of cane and scraping styles play a big role in gouge preference
=> I find less scraping means more tolerance to softer cane
But Howard's observations on Bart Schneeman's reeds are worth study. I noticed that with a proper gouge shape (thinner sides) and thin gouge, I can scrape shorter which greatly improves the stability and dynamic range of the reed.
Scraping longer sometimes makes the sound more velvety, but I got really great sounds with shorter scrape and there is a "pastoral" quality when I just go with the flow.
I definitely want to experiment with thinner gouge.... as soon as I can fix my machine again!!!!!
