On that (slightly sideways) note, has anyone ever purchased one of the wooden reeds cases that come out of Korea and China, and what was you experience with it? I bought one of the bassoon reed cases, and while I don't use it that often it seems to be fine, but just curious about ongoing regular use?
It depends on who makes it.
My teacher got one of the 50 reed cases on ebay, but the clasp stopped working soon after and she uses a rubber band to keep it closed. Looks like this:
I have a swiss/chinese oboe case (those chinese silk ones) and it's been good for a few years, there is fraying now in the rear corners of the case. The hinge is the silk fabric so at some point that would wear, but that is still in good condition.
I have one of these reed cases for YEARs, light brown, and it hasn't aged.
My FAVORITE reed case is an 8 reed case made by the oboe repair guy at RDG woodwinds, it fits in the oboe reed slot in your case. It's just lovely and convenient. I heard he stopped making them though... his website still has them.
