If you do go the ebay route at buying an oboe, Be sure to check the dealer out. There are a few oboists/repairmen out there that are offering older horns with some work done to them that sound like they should be a great deal for someone in your situation of not needed a top quality professional oboe at the current time. I know of one in particular that I've bought cane from that I would think that his oboe set-ups are great (I can refer you off the boards if you want). There are also some stores that do the same sort of thing that clarinuts.com does, so you could be on the watch for them too.
Good luck! I actually went from oboe to clarinet (after starting as a violinist). I think after playing oboe, everything else seems much easier in context!
