Hi,
I have a Ross and an Innoledy as well. I just tried four different shapes gouged on a Reeds 'n' Stuff machine, and I felt that the sound of all four reeds had a bit of the stuffy-yet-bright quality I associate with some German playing. My range of tone color felt quite limited and there was something rather raspy and heavy about all of the reeds. I also felt decidedly un-virtuosic. Disappointing!
I also like the concept of the double-radius machine, but this was really my first experience with one. I want to learn a LOT more about the effects of changing the relationship of center and side thickness. Of course, it has a lot to do also with your choice of shape since the thickness of the sides depends in the end on how much of the sides you are taking off in the shaping process.
That was not a good sentence. Sorry.
My ideal finished reed length is 72, so of course Bryan and I will have different needs... this is also something I'm willing to experiment with, but when I tie shorter than 73.5 I'm always fighting a too-large opening by the end of the process...
