I owned an Opus 1 machine, and while I first really enjoyed using it, I ultimately gave it up due to customer support with the machine. I think Robin was really busy before, and now I can only imagine how busy he is now that he's teaching at NCSA.
Mark, I'd suggest just getting a cheap old Graf machine for $400 and just giving it a go. At $400, who cares if you end up destroying it as long as you learn about the mechanics of the machine! That way, you could ultimately upgrade to another double radius machine or have something that you'd rather tinker with.
Double Radius machines I know of:
Opus 1
Graf
Jeanne
Ferillo
Kunibert michel
Reeds n' Stuff has one
Double Radius Machines no longer being made:
Reynolds
Barr
I sure a few others.
