Don't use oil at all.
Yes I am serious.
My brother is a forestry engineer with over 30 years experience and co-holds patents in quality control for building lumber. He agrees fully with Paul Laubin in saying that oil absorption in woods of that density is approximately non-existant.
In fact, in another thread here, someone mentioned that Paul Covey left a peice of scrap wood to soak in oil for a whole month: on inspection, the wood hand not absorbed any oil.
I have also corresponded with Marigaux, and they agree... except that they won't contradict those who oil for fear of offending and loosing customers.
What really kills the wood are changes in humidity (NOT temperature - except that changes in temperature is very often accompanied by changes in humidity). So a dampit is the best thing to maintain humidity compared to when you are playing.
=> ALSO: water (i.e. condensation) will "dry" the wood, that is, it will leach out the aspects of wood that keeps it healthy. So swabbing with a silk pull-through (or watever works as well) is vital.
