As a result of my mother's generosity, I bought a new Fox 520 cor (all plastic) from Patrick McFarland a few years ago. It has served me very well.
As someone above mentioned, cors are a lot less fussy than oboes. Give it a good reed, and it is ready to roll.
I had played only one other cor before this one, an ancient and worn pre-WWII Cabart, which looked like it had been cobbled together in a tinsmith's shop, and sounded about the same.
Having limited other experience with cors, I cannot say for sure whether my Fox lacks heart and soul, but as far as routine playing, I have no complaints about it. My teacher liked it. I like it. And the band directors for whom I play seem to like it, since both of them have repeatedly scheduled pieces which highlight it.
It may be that someday I will play something else, and realize that my instrument is not all that great. But it gets the job done, with a minimum of muss, fuss, and bother!
