Will anyone let you "try" their cor? Or, do you live near an area where a doublereed day will be held? Buy a reed, and try as many as you can. While I don't believe that cors are as tempermental as oboes, it could serve to let you know what brand fits you best. I was allowed to 'try' cors as the local high schools--the band teachers were interested to see if I could, as an oboist, adjust a cor back into working. (Yes, I could!) I found that for me, I had to really stretch my hands, and that was my biggest problem.
Eventually, I bought a 1950's Cabart (pre-Loree, when Cabarts were still pro instruments) at an auction site. After $75.00 worth of repair work, I have a cor that sounds great, and that actually likes the upper register. All for under $2000.00. But..I knew what I was looking for--brand age, condition (there were great pictures at the auction). If you go this route, there is risk. I was informed, and lucky. May you be too!
