The thrust of the study was not, "There are germs in your oboe", but rather, "There are germs in the school clarinets, flutes, trumpets, and saxophones that many children are sharing--shared instruments should be cleaned and disinfected between kids". Which is completely different.

They weren't looking at an individual's instrument, they were specifically looking at shared band instruments.
So we can all stop panicking, eh. I've been playing for 6 years now and haven't been any sicker than before 2005.
Actually, your own personal bacterial and fungal flora and fauna will colonize your oboe and reeds, and you'll be in balance with yourself, so unless you've got a severely compromised immune system, it's not a problem.
