I posted this on my Facebook wall awhile ago, tagging my friend who NEVER cleaned his clarinet. Needless to say, he now owns a cleaner.
As far as mouthpieces and cleaning cloths are concerned, yes I think they should be cleaned regularly (I usually add cloths to a load of washing each term, and rinse mouthpieces with soapy water), but reeds? Never have done, and not sure how to do it without risk of shortening their lifespan (assuming any alcohol based product would do that?)
I heard of a clarinet teacher who used to insist her students washed their mouthpieces with Listerine - would this work for reeds??
