Somehow I just don't buy into that. Sure there are germs on the reed, but I'm not so sure that will cause infection.
It just so happens that I'm recovering from serious illness.
The therapy that I had to undergo caused me to have months upon months of extreme faryngitis, and nearly complete loss of mucous membranes in both the mouth and throat area. During the period of recovery, I was fortunately able to pick up my oboe, and still recovered from the faryngitis and grew back most of my mucous membranes as well.
Needless to say that if I ever was susceptable to respiratory infection, it would have been at that time.
I'm not about to fear my instrument. Next thing you know, you'll be advised to wear gloves to play the oboe.
Who needs terrorism if we grow to fear the things we love!
Cheers
