I think oboists face a particular issue here that other instrumentalists do not--we are in high demand.
I am in a quartet with three other woodwind players. All of us have, in the past year, participated in a local orchestra. Many of us have considered quitting the orchestra for one reason or another. The clarinetist and flutist could both say, "Oh, the director can easily find somebody to replace me." But that was not so easy for me to say. Before I joined the orchestra there was a lot of pressure on me to join from the same clarinetist and flutist--because they wanted an oboist they could play in tune with! I am not irreplaceable, by any means--there are better oboists out there, for sure--but they're not as easy to find as flutists and clarinetists. And, for oboe, there's a pretty steep drop off in intonation and general listenability from the top tier down to the "mediocre." A flutist or clarinetist can choose whether or not to participate in an orchestra pretty much based on what's best for them--but an halfway-decent oboist also will also get a lot of pressure to join up from others.
