By try to join, do you mean audition? If so, I would recommend at least doing the audition (or going through a process of application), simply for the experience of doing so.
Are there any additional benefits to the school orchestra that you wouldn't get from the other one? Is the calibre of student ability equal to or better than your own ability? I don't mean this in a derogatory way to other students, but if you are considering taking this on as an 'overload' to your schedule, you need to make sure it is benefitting you. Is the conductor someone you would learn a lot from? Do they have a different approach to music than the other orchestra (for example, some ensembles learn a lot of music to expose students to a large variety, some focus on perfecting a few works).
If you are not already familiar with how that particular school orchestra runs, I would recommend sitting in a couple of rehearsals before making a commitment.
