How far are you rolling your lip in? You really don't have to roll all that much. Just a little bit of the reed needs to be inside -- just enough to get it to buzz.
In general, the oboe embouchure should be quite relaxed, not tense. Maybe it is just a matter of getting your musculature used to the idea. I probably didn't experience some of that initial awkwardness, because I was an active clarinetist when I started the oboe.
Have you ever played clarinet or sax? Was that comfortable for you?
As far as the idea of multiple notes on one fingering, yes, you do that on the oboe. Overblowing the lower octave gets you the higher octave, much like on a recorder. The oboe has a couple of register keys to facilitate this, much like the clarinet (which overblows at the 12th, not the octave).
