There are two types of resistance to the oboe reed. One is the air resistance and the other is the biting. If the reed requires lots of embouchure to get a sound ie as you apply pressure top and bottom the reed blades will get closer together....when they are a certain distance apart the reed will sound...(obviously you have to be blowing)....It is best to find a beginner reed that doesn't require too much embouchure strength. It should be easy to make a sound. Many times the quality of the tone is sacrificed on student reeds to make them easy to play. So find a reed that you can produce a sound on for a long time. There is no doubt that you will build muscles as you get more experience but take it easy at first. Make oboe playing a relaxed experience not an exhausting one. ps. I realize when I use the term biting that many oboists might disagree altogether but I'm just trying to be straight ahead with the information. Let the air do the work not your embouchure. John
