But as far as your caveat about buying from auction sites, there is only a certain amount of blame for this misadventure that can actually be placed on the auction site. At least as important is the fact that the purchaser apparently knew little about oboes.
Unless the instrument was substantially misrepresented (such as the seller saying it was conservatoire, or showing a photo of an instrument other than the one sent), the problem here is not with the auction site, but with the oboe acumen of the buyer.
