That was more-or-less my conclusion - and it begs the question: why design-in fully automatic octaves on an instrument, when you're going to end up using the 2nd octave key anyway? Somebody wasn't thinking straight. It was probably a checkbox thing, you know ..

Thumbplate? check
Conservatoire? check
Semi-automatic octaves? check
Fully-automatic octaves? check
..and all of the combinations of the above? <sigh> check

If you remember the name of the pro who used to use this system, please let me know? I would like to consult with him - see if there is any specific advice he can give. Or perhaps he was born with two thumbs on his left hand  :)
