Are you saying I should hover my thumb above the octave key? Don't I need it on either the key or the body to counterbalance the pressure from my right hand? [thinks]
Our church orchestra numbers about 6 people right now: two old guys who play the fiddle, one trumpet (the leader), one baritone whenever the trumpet calls im up and begs him to help out, one bassoon (until she leaves for college in a year), one clarinet, and a flute when she feels like it and her mother the clarinetist can nag her into it. Plus the piano and organ. I doubt whether my oboe will even be audible with all the keyboard stuff going on, but it's the thought that counts. :D
And all they do is play along with the hymns--our hymnal's publisher supplied "parts" for instruments.
No Handel, IOW. No soaring crystalline oboe melodies. But I have great plans for eventually ordering the scores myself and playing along with Handel on CD in the privacy of my bedroom.
