Do you roll your thumb onto the octave key, or do you pick it up?

Just ran across this in Evelyn Rothwell's "Oboe Technique, Third Edition" and am perfectly appalled, because my wrist doesn't BEND that way:

<<< The left thumb should normally be on the thumb-plate (or if you use the Conservatoire system, on the instrument just below the octave key or keys). It should be placed flat and very near the octave key, so that it can roll over on to it. Do not move the whole thumb on and off--use the left side of it with a rotary action; a very slight pressure is enough to work the octave key. >>>

I've been "moving the whole thumb on and off" for four months now, and I went upstairs and tried "using the left side of the thumb with a rotary action", and the laws of vertebrate physics just DO NOT allow it. I can't have my fingers *here* and my thumb *here* and then roll and twist my left thumb inward and up so as to press the octave key while still holding down the keys with my left fingers. It just does not bend that way.

So is she nuts, or using some weird kind of European oboe, or is she referring to "thumb plate" oboes (whatever those are) in this sentence and it's just poorly written so as to seem like she's referring to conservatory oboes, or am I the only one happily hopping my thumb onto and off the octave key who didn't get the memo about ROLLING your thumb onto it?
