Regarding the "A" above the staff, I distinctly recall that being a difficult note for me, too. I don't know why -- it doesn't seem reasonable. But if it is any consolation, that was one that I struggled with, too.
Coming from the clarinet, as I was, it seemed to me that the top notes of the oboe were just impossibly thin and un-resonant. I wanted them to be bigger and prettier. Somewhere along the line, I just learned to let the notes find themselves, rather than pushing them be something else that I mistakenly wanted them to be.
