Sarah, what make and model oboe are you playing?
I'm only assuming (as your ISP say Plymouth) it might be a basic thumbplate model (eg. B&H Regent, Buffet Artist, Bundy, Howarth S10/S10B, Howarth B/Orsi/Selmer Sterling/Buisson/etc.) whereby you will have to completely release the thumb (back or 1st) 8ve key as you open the 2nd 8ve key when going from upper G to A so both 8ve vents aren't open at the same time - you only want one 8ve key (1st or 2nd) open at any one time. Intermediate and pro oboes have semi-automatic 8ve keys so the left thumb can remain on the back 8ve touch when the 2nd 8ve key is opened - the vents will switch over from lower to upper when you open and release the 2nd 8ve.

The opinions I express are my own.
