Thanks to all of you above! - this forum is brilliant (and an antidote to living miles from anywhere). Not sure whether replying here addresses any of you individually or just sends a general message, so this is to all of Elizabeth, D and Mark. Elizabeth's tip about little but often is exactly the sort of suggestion that I needed to hear - it's obvious when you think about it - and likewise the reed hardness is a consideration I should look at. Hmmm, where to start with reeds, that's another question - so many shapes, scrapes...
Thanks to D for reminding me about the abdomen, which is an issue for both of us - I've been shown this in regard to both singing and oboe - and it can seem hard to get a feel for initially (or for some time). But it does seem right. More important, at least at my early stage, to visualise a robust column of air supported from the lungs than to rush breathless into fancy fingerwork. Calls for patience. Afraid I'll have to leave the baroque oboe idea for now, though I rather like the idea of a stripped-down instrument without so much ironwork on it. But for now it's enough of a pipe dream to afford a modern one!
Mark, it's nice to find somebody at least within a fifty-mile radius, and also to hear your comments on the Yamaha, which is one of the models I'm thinking about. Funny, I get hungry after playing too - but that's probably because I practice just before lunchtime! Will look at Britannia - have found their site - and maybe try one of their reed packs as you suggest. I'm interested in learning about reed making and will post a question on that here shortly.
