Robin, I am another adult learner and I have the opposite problem as I tend to go sharp. I will be delighted to read responses to your question here but I'd like to second the above comment about freer reeds. It does make an awful lot of difference. I see my teacher about every month and she is always scraping mine down to make them softer. I just bought a knife so I can learn to do it myself.

I keep being told that my lips shouldn't be doing all the work, it should be my abdomen. Well, mine is rather flabby and apparently contains no muscles at all - hence the playing sharp and my other problem of being dizzy. Not quite sure how to move forward, hope you have more luck.

A rather expensive suggestion - get a baroque oboe, they use a lot less pressure and a lot softer reeds. Could help you build up to the modern oboe and would be another toy - and we can't have too many of those.............
