hey folks, i'm in problem-solving mode

... the director -- and even some players -- keep telling our sax section (4 altos, 1 soprano and a tenor) to play quieter so he can hear our soprano woodwind section (the soprano sax, 1 oboe and an occasional drop-in flute, last summer to this summer) well, even the soprano sax at mf is like ff compared to the oboe, when we're playing the same notes, we hear soprano sax and the oboe's in there but where? The flute player said yesterday, this is hopeless, she couldn't hear herself even on the flying ledger lines

... part of this problem is our intermediate sax section hasn't got the technique yet to play quietly, but even so, maybe the oboe hasn't got something yet to play loudly without busting her guts wide open in the process?

... so i'm thinking i need help and maybe i need rowdier reeds to play in band, reeds with a lot more holler in them

what things can i change to get more pow! without undue extra physical effort?

change the tubes? harder bronze ones, wider rather than narrower aperture? Chudnow's E or S for more resonance?

get wider cane (closer to 11 instead of closer to 10.5)?

get better quality cane? (informed suggestions re brands welcome here)

use a more flexible taper scrape (like sax reeds) with greater surface area of overall responsiveness instead of 'stable' american scrape with its responsive tip?

change the oboe? Yamaha441 is a sweet gentle little thing, would another oboe give me more ping simply because of the way it's made?

Other ideas? Thanks :-)
