Three suggestions: 1. one ear plug, or a sound barrier behind your head; 2. a more focused, centered tone; 3. hold the instrument bell up a little higher and place the stand away from you a little where it will not block your sound. #1 will help you better appraise your sound production without the sax sound deafening you. #2 will help you project without the need of blowing your head off. #3 helps you project.
Often a reed, and frequently one which might sound 'dark' to the players nearby, will sound quite loud in its immediate environment, but will not project. Try taking the lightest of additional scrapes over the blend between the tip and heart (on an American style reed), and make certain that the tip of the tip is extremely thin.
Avoid sacrificing the quality of your own sound to compete with the noise emanating from instruments around you. Someone has to be the leader in the group in terms of standards...
