I remember just a couple of years ago after engineering a "shoot" of a parade (Video and audio recording in our cable company's production truck), I spied a girl who had been playing the oboe in one of the marchiing bands. I couldn't resist asking to play on her instrument and I was surprised at how responsive and strong the sound was. Of course, the sound was not what would be acceptable for orchestral playing, but it was effective! I looked at the reed and noticed that the tip was longer, but did not look overly thin. Also, it was a little more open. When I had a reed that was a little too closed, I would stick a pipe-cleaner, part-way through from the cork end of the tube, just enought to keep it open more than normal and let it dry that way, overnight. And sometimes, it worked!
I think the easiest thing to do is experiment with the tip, at least to begin with and see what happens. Good luck, LoreeBF51
