... thanks ChrisP, i've already made a black dummy pad to level off the diff on yamaha441 as something i simply had to do for my own comfort, and with previous thumb-plate experience rolling the thumb was already easy enough
... totally agree with you that ergonomics of conservatory oboes would be much improved by adding a back touchpiece under 1st 8ve key, even if only to make the relative exterior diameter of the pipe wider between thumb & index
... as for not gripping top of pipe, simply can't do that with t-plate model, considered 'bad form' on thumb-plate oboes, because have to lift thumb off the plate every time play C or Bb, it makes one depend on the thumb-rest a great deal more than Conservatory models, which have removed that insecure 'hanging in suspense' feeling you get when just lightly covering the B while thumb-plate's open
