I just wanted to report back to this thread that after reading these comments, I ordered a DI and am already pleased with the results. I'd been making my reeds to approximate the Schuring and Weber diagrams, but having put the DI to my current batch of reeds, I found that I was leaving too much cane in the windows, my tips could be thinner and my heart was not always well balanced, nothing you could really tell just by looking (or at least I couldn't). The result is that my reeds blow much more easily - I had gotten good at playing on reeds that were a bit harder than they needed to be - and they are more flexible. This definitely takes some of the guesswork out of the process and also gives one much more confidence to remove cane in larger increments, at least to get into the zone. So...thanks to all on this thread!
