Love the image of the giant broom/ironing/scale thingy.
I use a dial micrometer ALL the time. Helps me be consistant. Of course, once I get my reed to the "goal measurements" I can adjust as necessary. I never figured out how to get things even by backlighting the reed.

At the back of the heart, 66mm I take out a window in the spine to about 35 (yes, right in the spine). This seems to allow the center of the heart to be a bit thicker (which I think makes the sound richer) and brings up the pitch.
