Imagine a bathroom scale glued to the ceiling, with a broomstick glued to it pointing down hovering over an ironing board. The broomstick is touching the ironing board near the lip and the bathroom scale is showing 100 pounds. Now imagine having an super huge reed that will fit over ironing board like it was a plaque (or a pant leg <g>), the different areas of the reed between the broomstick and ironing board will read different weights on the scale. The weights being thickness in this case.
That's how a micrometer works. It's an all in-one mini scale/ironing board/broomstick assembly.
